Viva!LIFE issue 36 Winter 2007

Christmas is Coming

How does a wonderfully Rich Fruit Cake cooked with apricots steeped in brandy and then laced again in brandy sound? Or how about Boozy Rum and Plum pudding? If your juices are flowing then Zedzfoods are for you. The delicious Christmas cake comes in four sizes – 3in to 8in, prices £8 to £34. The pudding is 40 per cent dried fruit, 10 per cent rum – so you won’t need to get out the booze to feel tiddled! Serves 4-6 and costs £7 (RRP) or £9.50 if mail ordered on its own.

A vegan company, their entire range is also wheat and gluten free. All year round they make pasties and muffins – try the filling and yumptious banana, coconut and date! Or as we’re on a festive theme, try the mincemeat and brandy muffins – a nice change from mince pies (£7.50 for 6). Zedzfoods, tel 01691 648029 or email info@zedzfoods.co.uk; or see www.zedsfoods.co.uk for stockists and their entire range.

Spice Up your Life – well Sausage!

If you miss getting your mouth round a spicy sausage, fear not. Vegan food company, Redwood have worked their magic again and launched a Cheatin’ Chorizo. It works very well in a tortilla (with a glass of red wine) or try it with cannelloni beans and coriander for a speedy supper. I warn you it’s moreish, so buy several packets! (£2.55 for 150g.)

Also making their debut are their Beanfeast pate – a departure from Redwood’s mock meats and cheeses – and made from a tasty blend of 11 beans and seeds. It is highly healthy, tasty and convenient way of eating these little nutrient packed power houses. (£1.39 for 120g.)
Also new is Greek-style dairy-free ‘cheese’ (£2.59 for 200g.) and Cheatin’ Instant Vegan Gravy Powder (£2.39 for 200g) to enrich stews, soups or, of course, a gravy on your nut roast! From health food stores and from Redwood’s online shop www.redwoodfoods.co.uk.

Get Your Oats

Nairn’s Oat Bakes (30g/42p) are crispy, crunchy crisps of oats which are baked, rather than fried and have no added sugar so they’re a scrumptious, healthy alternative to conventional crisps. Try dipping them in hummus. The vegan flavours are Tomato, Garlic & Basil and Lemon & Cracked Black Pepper. Available from most supermarkets, health shops and from the VVF by mailorder. Tel: 0117 970 5190.

I Need Fresh Air!

Tobery are a vegetarian healthy products company, and one of their best sellers (especially with smokers, people with smelly pets (bless ‘em!) and allergy sufferers) is the PureAire Revitaliser (£39.99). It comes with five plant essences, are non-toxic, safe, environmentally friendly and bio-degradable. Very simple to use – just add tap water, a few drops of one of the sample essences, plug in and switch on. I used it when a smoker stayed and it really works, releasing a lovely aroma of my choice.

Polluted air is drawn up and treated it in the solution. It also converts positive ions into negative and humidifies stagnant air from central heating systems with a scrubbing effect, eliminating almost all harmful microorganisms and odours.

Available from www.tobery.co.uk or call 07880 990141. Or pay by cheque (payable to Tobery Products LLP, add £1.20 for p&p) to: Tobery Products LLP, 58 Pinewood Way, North Colerne, Chippenham SN14 8QU. Include your order, name and address!.

Full of Energy

Do you know there is such a thing as 24 hour solosists – people who ride their bike for a day without stopping?  If you too are a physical fitness nut, Torq Vegan Recovery with glutamine, ribose and HMB could be for you.

Amanda (who has just completed a half marathon for Viva! – phew) tried the Torq Lemon & Lime Energy drink (500g/£8). “It’s a great zesty taste and helps you sustain a faster pace for longer.” Energy drinks are endurance fuels with complex carbohydrates and electrolytes that claim to aid working muscles.

Energy bars cost £27.60 for box of 24. Gym-mad Michelle said: They’re scrummy – especially the Raspberry & Apple one. After one bite I put my kit away and popped the kettle on!” Tennis star John (well, he plays for Usk club), said of the Pineapple & Ginger bar: “I’m impressed. It’s tasty and the energy boost may keep me up all night!  Seriously, it does help stamina.” What can I say? I’m buying some!

Several varieties are available from www.torqfitness.co.uk or tel: 0845 128 4312. Also  in some independents (listed on the website).

Say Sheese

Bute Island Foods have launched a new range of soya-based cheeses, or Sheeses, free from hydrogenated fats. They include Creamy Sheese (£1.85 per tub) in several flavours, from Cheddar Style Spread to Mexican. Of the hard Sheeses – my favourite is Blue Style. Tastes remarkably like Stilton (how do they do that?) but not the same texture and is excellent with pears, in vinaigrettes and in a dip for potato wedges. I also liked Smoked Cheddar on pizza. My children scoffed it down – very gratifying. Tony loved the Chives in Creamy Sheese smoothed on new potatoes and asparagus, in leek soup and spread thickly on toasted muffins! From health food shops or www.goodnessdirect.co.uk

Giveaway

Viva! has teamed up with Bute Island Foods for a fun cookery comp. We have five Creamy Sheeses to give away to 30 lucky people. Just send your favourite Sheese recipe (simple or pernickety), with your name and address to Viva! Competition, Bute Island Foods, 14 Craigmore Road, Rothesay, Isle of Bute PA20 9LB. Or email foods@buteisland.com (with ‘Viva! Competition’ as subject). Closing date January 3, 2008. Five winners will be featured on our web site and the winner’s recipe will be featured in next issue of Viva!LIFE.
